Mitosis requires a big effort.  I think we might want to leave it as is for now until we're ready to whip it into shape.  Up to you but I'd say just leave it as is until we can get a few people working together to revamp the whole module.

A first step would be to use a very simple format, a text one (ldif for instance), but encapsulate in a way we don't have to care about the transported data. For that, we need an encoder and a decoder, with an defined interface, allowing us to switch it if needed.
