Benefit:
You need to add a user only at 1 place for different apps

Disadvantage:
Once in the .htaccess file a user has access to all apps using the
.htaccess file

I know that most apps are configurable which .htaccess file to use but
from an adminstrator perspective is really easier to configure it once
and then just update one file instead of updating files all over the
place not knowing where the are located exactly.

Of course this will become much easier once using ldap authentication ;-)
