Yeah there are some other problems with uniqueMember attribute :
http://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/DIRSERVER-757
and
http://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/DIRSERVER-766

I think that the second one is related to what you get.

Let's throw a glance to this problem, I think it's time for a debugging
session :)
