i think its an excellent idea for an extension.

isn't gzip used for HTTP compression? ah i see, it's actually the same
as zlib :)

there are also some RFCs, just in case:

seemingly there are no more valid patents on the lzw-algorithm.

probably the compression should be configurable per session,
since i.e. in HTTP it also depends on the clients capabilities (header
accept info), if compression can be used.

another idea is to have some message-size limit for the compression,
to avoid delays on big messages (files). you also do not want to gzip
an already zipped file or any other already heavily compressed data.
this calls for a message based configuration of the compression, but
this might go too far.
