As said on the page : "Tomcat 5.5 uses Commons Logging throughout its internal code allowing the developer to choose a logging configuration that suits their needs" but Tomcat is something very different from ApacheDS. It's an application server, and developers who works on it will be very pleased to be able to choose their favorite logger.
