I guess hand-coded and generated each have advantages.

Personally I don't feel comfortable that I could produce a high-quality hand-coded BER-encoder
so I'd rather opt for a generated one instead. I also live in the believe that it will require
less implementation effort, leaving more time for the other functionality that needs to be
done in our application.

Are you sure ? I've written quite a bit of BER code and I much prefer the hand-built approach.
If you need to parse a zillion different message types then yes a compiler could be handy.
