ApacheDS: Bringing "lightweight" to ldap development

+ + +

Abstract

+ +
+

Apache Directory Server (ApacheDS) is the ideal directory server for developing LDAP aware software. It is often very difficult to reproduce production environments during various phases the software development lifecycle. Embedding ApacheDS into your tests alleviates the pain of having to launch a full LDAP server beside your tests : you get it for free, unit and integration tests are then easy to write and run. LDAP server available for testing is not always an option, especially for tests in open source projects where anyone can download and run these tests in environments the developer is not in control of. Beside being a fully compliant LDAP server, ADS can also be seen as the perfect LDAP server when it comes to use it in development environment: it's embeddable for unit tests, fully LDAP v3 compliant, light, and easy to use. Hence there are many reasons why you should use ApacheDS before going to production. Many people are using Tomcat in production, but a lot mor e are using it during the development phase because it's light, easy to install, easy to use, and free of course. ApacheDS provides similar advantages. Furthermore the tooling ApacheDS offers (Apache Directory Studio) is very appealing. This presentation will show you how to use ApacheDS in a development environment, and why it would be a good idea to use it in production as well.

Architecting the Modern LDAP Renaissance: The Apache Directory Vision

+ +

Abstract

+ +
+

Directory technology is an indivisible cornerstone in computing science and LDAP specifically is essential in several industries however it is severely underutilized. One would expect the demand for LDAP to increase as infrastructures and the Internet grow, with more boundaries, nodes, services, users and ways of doing business emerging rapidly. Directories inherently solve integration problems yet more integration problems appear while complexities of existing problems are compounded. We're not witnessing a proportional increase in the adoption rate of directories; namely LDAP directories. This is not a coincidence. It is the result of a lack of several factors: tooling support, courses on directory technology in academia, qualified domain experts and rich integration constructs. More specifically, information architects and key decision makers incorrectly choose to apply ad hoc solutions to problems rather than opting to using directories. If these limitations are remov ed then there would be greater comfort, flexibility and adoption. LDAP could do more than it does today namely in the area of provisioning and workflow. LDAP could potentially experience a Renaissance with renewed interest due to increased demand to solve the classical integration problems it was designed for and beyond. We discuss these limitations, and the proposed means to remove them, all in an effort to express our vision at the Apache Directory Project. Our aim is clear; we intend to influence and incite other directory implementers and projects by our example to trigger what we envision as the Modern LDAP Renaissance.

Workshop: Embed ApacheDS within an application

+ +

Abstract

+ +

The Apache Directory Server (ApacheDS) is embeddable within applications and application servers to provide directory and security services out of the box. This session with describe and step through the process required to embed ApacheDS within an application. The configuration of the server for embedded operation as well as the API's will be discussed. If time permits an embedded application will be built and demonstrated during this session.

Enterprise LDAP and Apache Directory Server

+ +

Abstract

+ +
+

LDAP is a key technology for modern enterprise infrastructures. It's role has been critical for network operating systems for years now. The demand for directories has increased and shifted to other areas. Today directories are being used to centralize access to common information shared across applications, for managing identity and for providing various security services. LDAP, and directories in general, solve integration problems which reduce the amount of data replicated across enterprise applications. Apache Directory Server has been specifically designed to mitigate several enterprise problems ideally solved using LDAP.
+In this presentation you'll understand the critical role LDAP has within the enterprise and the class of problems it is designed to solve. In addition you'll be introduced to the Apache Directory Server and it's various features which make it ideal for use in the enterprise to solve these problems.
