try something like this.
                Criteria c = new Criteria();
                Criteria.Criterion fromCat = c.getNewCriterion(
                    IxConnectionPeer.FROM_CATEGORY, category, 
Criteria.EQUAL);
                Criteria.Criterion toCat = c.getNewCriterion(
                    IxConnectionPeer.TO_CATEGORY, category, Criteria.EQUAL);
                c.add(fromCat.or(toCat));
