Note note = NoteManager.getInstance(x); ?

And what about  Note note = NotePeer.retrieveByPK(x);
or Note note = NotePeer.doSelectNoteBy(x) // you must create de 
doSelectNoteBy() method

I'm using MySQL and note.setEffectiveDate(null);   works.
