The following modifications were made to this issue:

Status changed from "New" to "Closed"
Resolution set to "Invalid"

On further investigation, I found that Oracle does not behave as documented in this regard,
at least as far as VARCHAR2 fields (generated by Torque when schema.xml specifies VARCHAR
data type).
