Hmm, I thought the first was an Apple JVM thing as others couldn't  
replicate it. A thought on it, are you setting a UTF-8 character set  
for postgres in the jdbc url? I have hit things in the past where  
postgres borks if you don't tell it a character set it presumes ASCII.
