this is what i found in the Log interface docs ;-)

if (log.isDebugEnabled()) {
     ... do something expensive ...
     log.debug(theResult);
}

look at 
http://jakarta.apache.org/commons/logging/api/org/apache/commons/logging/package-summary.html
to see how the logging could be configured
