DataNucleus does *not* look for any log4j.properties file anywhere. Log4J looks for log4j.properties,
and it either expects it provided as a System property to the Java process, or at the root
of the CLASSPATH. That is nothing to do with DataNucleus IMHO. Please clarify where you think
DataNucleus is involved
