There's some discussion about a similar problem in this bug report:
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/DERBY-637

The reporter of that bug did not mention that the table had been
compressed, but others have commented on the bug saying they have seen
the same error message after SYSCS_COMPRESS_TABLE.
