Subject Open Derby database in read-only mode

Env:
NetBeans 6.5
Apache Derby - 10.4.1.3

Java Swing

Is it possible to open a database in read-only mode and not create a db.lck
file?

I am attempting to open a database and read the contents and then delete the
database from within the app.
But the db.lck file cannot be deleted until the app is exited.
