The problem with Sequoia is that it doesn't support automatic recovery
of cluster nodes.  Let's say if you reboot one of cluster databases then
it won't join cluster when it's back. Then you need to use Sequoia
console to synchronize it with cluster.  And it works only if you start
your databases in the reverse order they were stopped. Otherwise it
complains about "not last down" and refuses to start.  Even more -
sometimes all nodes refuses to start (complaining about wrong order) and
there is no way to start your cluster. 

But HA-JDBC supports automatic recovery and synchronization.  I did many
tests trying to break it. I had a small program inserting new records in
4 Derby databases and at the same time I powered off/rebooted some of
cluster nodes.  HA-JDBC always synchronized database correctly after

I'd recommend using HA-JDBC.
