Hi Nick,

Using inlined bracketed quotes in the SQL is a missing feature in Derby, 
and is filed as issue DERBY-1749. Not yet implemented.
    https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/DERBY-1749

I'll update the JIRA issue as the specifics of the workaround are 
missing it seems.
