If you want column names to be case sensitive you can  put them in 
double quotes.
e.g.
ij version 10.3
ij> connect 'jdbc:derby:wombat;create=true';
ij> create table t ("lower" int);
0 rows inserted/updated/deleted
ij> select * from t;
lower
-----------

0 rows selected
