I tried a couple of times each sending the requested "blank email" both with and without a subject and each was rejected as spam. I never tried adding anything to the body. Finally I did receive the confirmation email instructing me to click the provided link to send confirmation back that I really wanted to subscribe. I did that and it was also rejected as spam. Again I tried both with and without a subject line. Finally, I searched around the Apache main site until I found a contact address the suggested it would actually go to a person. I emailed it with a description of my problem, including the link from the confirmation email. The next day I received another email from the autoresponder that I had successfully subscribed. The whole ordeal consumed several days and probably consisted to close to a dozen emails.
