Separate tabs might work around an issue that Dan Debrunner raised on 
derby-dev:

I posted a query to the user@forrest.apache.org list asking if there is 
a way to turn off the collapsible menus in 0.6. --I have looked and 
don't spot a way to do that, but I'll let everyone know what I find out.
