It is great to hear of your interest in this project, and of your interest in Derby!

It's important to understand that there may be multiple applications for this project, and
at most one will be accepted by Google, so it is important that you make as strong and complete
an application as you can:
- follow all of Google's instructions about how to apply, very precisely
- do as much investigation and understanding of Derby as you can, ahead of time, such as:
downloading and building the source code, running the Derby test suites, reading the Derby
tutorials and documentation, etc.
- present as clearly as you can in your application how you intend to undertake the project
to improve the Derby Optimizer
