Thanks for catching and investigating this, Knut. I'm puzzled about the deserialization problem
with TypeDescriptorImpl. These are the objects stored in SYS.SYSCOLUMNS.COLUMNDATATYPE. I
ran the following experiment:

1) created database db_10_9 using 10.9.1.0.

2) then used Derby 10.10.1.1 to run the following program which deserializes all of the TypeDescriptorImpl
objects in SYS.SYSCOLUMNS.COLUMNDATATYPE. The program ran fine.

import java.sql.*;

public class w
{
    public static void main( String... args ) throws Exception
    {
        Connection  conn = DriverManager.getConnection( "jdbc:derby:db_10_9" );
        ResultSet   rs = conn.prepareStatement
            ( "select columndatatype from sys.syscolumns" ).executeQuery();

        while( rs.next() )
        {
            Object  obj = rs.getObject( 1 );
            System.out.println( "columndatatype is a " + obj.getClass().getName() );
        }
    }
}

> I noticed that after running the SignatureChecker tool on a database with version 10.10.1.1,
I could not boot it with trunk (neither hard nor soft upgrade worked).
> To reproduce, create a database and run SignatureChecker with 10.10:
> $ java -jar /code/derby/oldreleases/10.10.1.1/derbyrun.jar SignatureChecker 'jdbc:derby:db;create=true'
> Then, try to boot that database with trunk:
> $ java -Dderby.database.allowPreReleaseUpgrade=true -jar /code/derby/trunk/jars/sane/derbyrun.jar
SignatureChecker 'jdbc:derby:db'
