I ran BlobClob4BlobTest 100 times against 10.9, jdk15, sane classes, windows and it did not
fail ever. 
Looks like some change after 10.9 has caused a regression caught by this test.  The problem
may be
a jvm bug as Knut suggests, but it looks like something went into 10.10 that causes this to
happen
now, where it did not before (at least probably as you never know with intermittent bugs -
but 43/100 vs
0/100 seems a likely trend).

Any suggestions on changes to look at appreciated.  I'll run some binary searches on trunk
otherwise.
