The property derby.stream.error.logBootTrace might be useful in debugging the issue: 
http://db.apache.org/derby/docs/10.9/ref/rrefproperlogboottrace.html

I think the property exists in 10.5 but was not documented until later.  Regardless, it is
always good to check to see if your issue reproduces with latest release  of Derby (currently
10.9)
