Thanks Knut.   Actually it turns out that Derby is being started by Glassfish and the stdout
of "-verbose:gc" is going nowhere.  

I do appreciate your help!

It is printed to the console in my environment:

% DERBY_OPTS=-verbose:gc /code/derby/releases/db-derby-10.8.2.2-bin/bin/startNetworkServer
