If we re-use the mechanism from DERBY-712, then we will probably see more holes in the lists
of generated identity values. Holes will appear when the engine is bounced and some number
of pre-allocated identity values are thrown away. I think this behavioral change would be
ok for a maintenance release like 10.8.2. Other opinions?

With sequences, the number of pre-allocated values is hard-coded to be 5. With a little effort,
we could add an api to configure that number. I think it would be ok to use the same hard-coded
number of pre-allocated values for identity columns, too. We can consider adding an api to
configure this number after we gain experience with how pre-allocation behaves in the wild.
Other opinions?

until the main transaction commits. So as soon as there is one lock collision, the waiting
transaction changes to a locking mode that increases the chances of others having to wait,
which seems to result in all insert threads having to obtain the SYSCOLUMNS locks in the main
transaction. The end result is that only one of the insert threads can execute at any given
time as long as the application is in this state.
