I think I can see what happened in 10.5 now. I came across the character ta=
ble for Mac OS Roman encoding here: http://smontagu.damowmow.com/genEncodin=
gTest.cgi?family=3Dapple&codepage=3Droman

Now, "=C3=B6" has the codepoint 0xF6, which is encoded in UTF-8 as {0xC3, 0=
xB6}. If you decode this byte sequence using the above mentioned character =
table, you get the character sequence "=E2=88=9A=E2=88=82", which has the u=
nicode escape sequence \u221A\u2202. This is the same escape sequence used =
to represent =C3=B6 in the 10.5 messages.

Same goes for "=C3=BC": Codepoint 0xFC --> UTF-8 {0xC3, 0xBC} --> decoded u=
sing character table to "=E2=88=9A=C2=BA", whose unicode escape is \u221A\u=
00BA.

I think this should be a fairly easy scripting task to fix as well.
