Thanks Rick...

I noticed something interesting - on a (linux) machine where I had set up to build with the
ibm jvms there was no problem after your changes. I think the relevant difference between
the two systems is the ant version.
So, your changes worked (even with ibm jvms) with ant 1.6.5, but not with ant 1.7...
