Here's an interesting example of a query combining both expressions 
and column aliases in the ORDER BY clause:

 create table t1 (a varchar(10));
 insert into t1 values ('M'), ('k'), ('c'), ('K'), ('m');
 SELECT CONCAT('test', a) AS str FROM t1 ORDER BY UPPER(str);
