Well first I am not even sure what the "correct syntax" is that Derby is expecting here. 
But if there is a syntax that actually worked then I could try to morph the query into that
form prior to sending it.  But that is a long term solution as it would most definitely require
some of the HQL translator changes to implement correctly.
