Fernanda Pizzorno commented on DERBY-1274:
------------------------------------------

Hi Knut Anders,

It is true that using different versions of the NetworkServerControl to start and stop the
server will cause a protocol error. This happens because the patch changes the command protocol,
and the different versions of the NetworkServerControl would have different versions of the
protocol. As soon as the databases should only be shut down if the server has been started
and stopped from the command line, we need to change the command protocol, but, as you said,
if we don't care how the server was stopped, only how it was started, then we don't need to
change the protocol.

> If network server is started and shutdown from the comand line t does not shutdown the
database. This can is evidenced by the fact that the db.lck file remains after the following
steps.
> java org.apache.derby.drda.NetworkServerControl start &
> <some database access>
> java org.apache.derby.drda.NetworkServerControl shutdown
> There is much discussion about the correct behavior of NetworkServer in this regard
related to embedded server scenarios in DERBY-51, but it seems clear in this case the databases
should be shutdown.
