This seems like a good idea to me, and I like where it seems to be going.

But it seems like a rather large project, and I'm not sure how to approach it.

In the meantime, there were several smaller and more concrete comments on
my previous patch proposal, so I'll at least update it and re-post it,
while (hopefully) the broader discussion continues.
