Thanks, Kathey. I think you understate your expertise here and overstate 
mine. I understand that you are very busy and, as someone who also feels 
swamped right now, you have my sympathies!

I would also like to express my deep thanks to Bryan and Knut for their 
thoughtful reviews of this patch.
