Indeed, removing the sychronization in removeStatement seems to have resolved the problem.
   So I'll run tests and get this checked into the trunk.  I don't have a standalone test
for this but Rajesh does run his stress test with every release, so we will have to test that
way.
This one probably  ought to go into 10.1 branch as well.
