The patch looks good. Only thing I would consider changing is:

    Any schema defined for a synonym cannot start with 'SYS'.

to, something like:

   Synonyms can't be defined in system schemas. All schemas starting with 'SYS' are considered
system schemas and are reserved for Derby use.
