Subject [jira] Commented: (DERBY-197) Add tip for Windows users in BUILDING.txt file regarding file paths in the ant.properties file
Date Tue, 17 May 2005 13:55:11 GMT

Edward Rayl commented on DERBY-197:
-----------------------------------

Escaping backslashes is unnecessay on Windows because it is not necessary to use the backslash
in the first place. Standard Java slashes work just fine. Here are entries from my ant.properties:

j14lib=C:/j2sdk1.4.2/jre/lib
j13lib=C:/j2sdk1.3.1/jre/lib

Notice that the colon is NOT escaped. I feel format above is preferable for Windows because
it comforms more closely to default examples used by Sun and is easier to read.

> In the section 3.2, step 2, where the user is instructed to add the j14lib and j13lib
properties to the ant.properties file, it would be worth reminding the user that on windows,
the file seperators need to be escaped. This is something most windows users will know, but
it can be easily forgotten, especially when in other parts of the instructions you don't need
to escape paths (e.g. when setting the path).
> For example, the following works:
> j14lib=C:\\j2sdk1.4.2_06\\jre\\lib
> j13lib=C:\\jdk1.3.1_14\\jre\\lib
> The following doesn't:
> j14lib=C:\j2sdk1.4.2_06\jre\lib
> j13lib=C:\jdk1.3.1_14\jre\lib
> and causes the following errors:
