I think perhaps the reason it is not synchronized  is because there is
just one ClientThread object  listening on the socket,  assigning
connection numbers and creating connections.

Sounds good  to me from a usability perspective.  When forced to pour
over a trace I find it much easier to tell 1 from 2 than one UUID from
