If you check out and build Derby yourself, the default mode of building is a debug build.

With the consideration that products embedding Derby would desire a jar file with as small
a footprint as possible, I created the distributions on the website with an insane/non-debug
build, with all compiler optimizations turned on and assertions removed. However, perhaps
posting a -debug distribution along with the -lib, -bin, and -src distributions should be
