Yes you are missing something, they are not abstract in JDBC 2.1/JDK 1.3.

Derby still supports JDK 1.3 environments.

The build setup requires a JDK 1.3 and jJDK 1.4 environment, if you are
having trouble building, please make sure you are following the
instructions carefully.
