Note that Cloudscape's implementation of user defined types as Java types is proprietary and (as you have found) will lock any application into a Cloudscape database solution. After Cloudscape implemented their Java user defined type system, Java types in SQL were standardized in part 13 of the SQL standard. It's also interesting to note that Java types in SQL has not been widely adopted, the current trend seems to be for OR mappers, like Hibernate or EJBs. In eight years of working with Cloudscape, we did not come up with a compelling use of Java objects stored in the database.
