another hint for those coming from the realm of lotus notes:
please trim the message to which you're replying so that only
the parts specifically relevant are included.  who wrote them
should also be included.  if large amounts of text are removed
sometimes an indication is given somehow, such as being replaced
with a line like

[snippage]

this makes it clear that you're aware that there's context, and
are trying to address a specific item within its framework rather
than in isolation.

for example, the entire previous exchange included in the last
message could have been trimmed to:

Location aside, does that mean that before submitting a change from a
contributor, a committer  should verify that the contributor  has a CLA
on file?  If so, how would I do that?

sometimes quoting the entire message is appropriate, but usually not.
a reasonable rule of thumb is that the quoted port *shouldn't* be much
larger than the text you're adding.  it's just a guideline/sanity check,
though.
