Subject Problems with Enigmail and applying in-line Patches

I scooped this topic from an earlier thread to document on the Derby
web site. For just one of the emails in the thread about this topic see:

http://nagoya.apache.org/eyebrowse/ReadMsg?listName=derby-dev@db.apache.org&msgNo=248

So, there are two issues with sending/saving patches with Enigmail that
prevent applying that patch (1) tildes (2) an extra "- "

(1) tildes

By default, Enigmail handles Mozilla's text=flowed formatting by replacing
leading spaces with a tilde ("~") character (see
http://enigmail.mozdev.org/troubles.html#flowed). Unfortunately, those
tildes make it difficult to apply patches posted to the derby-dev mail
list. So, when you post a patch using Enigmail, turn off the Allow
flowed text setting:

Enigmail -> Preferences -> Sending -> Allow flowed text (RFC 2646)

Turning it off works (does not produce tildes).

(2) The extra "- "

Here are the most coherent write-ups on this issue that I was able to
find:

http://mozdev.org/pipermail/enigmail/2003-August/000233.html
http://www.stillhq.com/extracted/gnupg-api/doc/faq.html#q4.7

But I'm not finding a clear solution and, unfortunately, I just tried
Jan's suggestion to use Enigmail/Save decrypted message and it doesn't
work for me:

| I figured that out, you have to use Enigmail/Save decrypted message
| to get the original text from inlined patches. That will remove the
- - escapes.

I would think that other Apache projects have encountered this, but
didn't get any search hits. Has anybody else had time to look at this?

thanks,

 -jean
