I agree with you, but I was just suggesting to revert the lines stated above, so the old behaviour
is reinstated. Since I don't know if the change I made is actually better as a default than
the previous one.
If all drivers are actually returning something on connection.getCatalog, the current change
could actually  be a better default.
The only way to find the best default is to back that up with tests, which are not in place

The reason why I solved it this way, instead of what you are proposing, is simply because
I am (still) using the JDBCModelReader directly in the code where I hit this issue today.
