Adrian,

Most likely, your ~/.m2/repository has some corrupt meta-data.   
Unfortunately, it happens from time to time.

I would suggest doing a "rm -rf ~/.m2/repository/org/apache/maven" to see 
if making it re-download the maven stuff will help.
