In light of your explanation, I agree that using setCharacterEncoding is not the right way
to go.

I will try the ctx.getMessageContext().put(Message.ENCODING, "UTF-8") approach, but I don't
know when I will be able to.  I should be able to try it tonight at the latest.  If that works,
it sounds like the cleanest solution.

Also, I agree it makes more sense that character encoding be set on a per-operation basis.
