I felt like adding them now rather than triggering questions later.
Note, that you don't need to use them explicitly, because the default
is $project.build.sourceEncoding, which would exactly match your
suggestion.

I may have missed something here. When I was young, we used to use
changes.xml, and I still prefer it, because it is handled by Maven
automatically.
