n for building from a git checkout.=0A=0AI followed the instructions you re=
ferenced on a completely fresh EC2 instance (substituting the necessary sec=
tions to build js-devel-1.8.5 instead of using the default js-devel-1.7.0, =
as suggested in the INSTALL.Unix file) and everything appeared to go smooth=
ly. Unfortunately, now when I run "sudo /usr/local/etc/rc.d/couchdb start" =
it says: "Starting database server couchdb", but then when I run "sudo /usr=
/local/etc/rc.d/couchdb status" it always replies: "Apache CouchDB is not r=
unning". It seemed like I followed basically the same steps as before, with=
 the only major change being using 1.4.0 from the prepackaged source releas=
e as opposed to the 1.3.1 git checkout. I looked in the log file location (=
/usr/local/var/log/couchdb) but didn't see any files, so I'm not sure what =
the best way to begin diagnosing the current problem might be. =0A=0AI'm op=

he view indices since I can add/remove/delete documents all day long, howev=
er, once I add a design view and try to access it the same thing happens.=

 to fix the problem. I've looked at all of the folders listed in Asaf's gui=
