I have had no problems installing/running CouchDB on Arch Linux.

*basically just install:*
  pacman -S couchdb

*start:*
  rc.d start couchdb

*and add to your daemons in /etc/rc.conf:*
  DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network netfs crond sshd httpd couchdb)
