Paul,

I fixed the problem. The version of curl I had pre installed on my system didn't have a curl-config
script so I added it manually. This gets you passed the configure but breaks on the make.
I finally had to just install curl-7.19.x alongside curl-7.16.4 and everything worked.

Hmmm. See if you can find the curl section in config.log and paste that.
