I access it through nginx, but this worked perfectly until I updated  
couchdb. The nginx config looks like this:

upstream db {
	server 127.0.0.1:5984;
}

server {
	listen 80;
	server_name my_domain.com;
	location / {
		proxy_pass http://db;
                 auth_basic "Restricted area";
                 auth_basic_user_file /path_to_password_file/.htpasswd;
		break;
	}
}
